February Cooking Demo - B-12
February 21, 2023
February is the season of love, so we're taking advantage of this opportunity to share the love of cooking and nutrition with our community! As part of our Culture of Care, we believe in educating not only our residents and their families on crucial nutrition for seniors but passing this knowledge onto our community members as well. Heather Hill teamed up with the Chardon Senior Center this month to present another educational and delicious cooking demo with Chef Jason!

This month's cooking demo focused on B-12. Vitamin B-12 is involved in making DNA, red blood cell formation, and proper nerve function. It ensures proper growth and development in humans at all stages of life. Older adults do not require more vitamin B-12 than younger adults, but absorption of vitamin B-12 may decrease with age.
Did you know that B-12 is naturally available in animals?
Vitamin B-12 is primarily found in animal products. Older adults who consume very little to no animal products are at an increased risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency. This group of individuals must be mindful to eat foods fortified with vitamin B-12 or take a supplement. Issues such as weight loss, anemia, and constipation are sometimes due to a deficiency in B-12. [Information from The National Resource Center on Nutrition and Aging]
